Sights in and around Punat

 

Punat on the island of Krk not only offers beautiful beaches and idyllic nature, but also numerous cultural and historical sights. Here are some of the highlights you can discover during your stay:

 

Košljun Island & Franciscan Monastery

A must-see for every visitor is the small island of Košljun, which can be reached by boat from Punat. It is home to an impressive Franciscan monastery from the 15th century with a valuable library, old manuscripts and an ethnographic museum. The visit offers a peaceful atmosphere and an insight into the history and spirituality of the region.

Church of St Dunat

This small Romanesque church from the 12th century is located directly on the coastal road between Punat and Krk. It is one of the most important pre-Romanesque buildings in Croatia and a popular photo motif.

Old town centre of Krk

Just a few kilometres from Punat lies the historic town of Krk with its winding alleyways, old town walls and the imposing Assumption of Mary Cathedral. The town walls date back to Roman times and the cathedral impresses with its Romanesque architecture.

Frankopan Castle

Also in Krk is the castle of the Frankopan noble family from the 12th century. The fortress offers a great view of the town and the sea and tells the story of one of the most powerful Croatian families.

 

Biserujka stalactite cave

A little further away, near the village of Rudine, lies the Biserujka stalactite cave. The easily accessible cave boasts impressive stalactites and stalagmites and offers a welcome cool-down on hot summer days.

 

Wineries & olive groves

The island of Krk is known for its Vrbnička Žlahtina wine and high-quality olive oils. A visit to one of the local wineries or olive oil producers offers a wonderful opportunity to taste the regional specialities.

Hiking trails & viewpoints

For nature lovers, there are numerous hiking trails that lead through the Mediterranean landscape. Particularly worthwhile is the hike to the Obzova viewpoint, the highest point on the island of Krk, from where you have a spectacular view over the Kvarner Bay.
